New apprentices take up their roles

Shoreline’s new apprentices have begun work with contractors Mears Ltd and Bullock, in a programme to get young people started in a career.

The apprentices, aged between 16 and18, were chosen after two open days held earlier this year where they were invited along to be interviewed and go through a skills test.

Now the apprentices will be trained in trade skills including joinery and plumbing and are working towards a nationally recognised qualification, while being employed and earning a wage.

Shoreline and the partners plan to take on more apprentices every year for the next three years.

“I wanted to train as a joiner because I enjoy working with my hands and I think it is something I will be good at. I really wanted an apprenticeship because it gives me an opportunity to see what it is actually like in the real world.

“I love the fact that I have been given this opportunity. If I hadn’t been given this chance then I would probably still be at college but I feel like this is a lot different to college because I am getting more hands on experience and I feel that I am learning a lot more. I have already learnt such a lot in the few weeks that I have been here.

“I hope to stay within the kitchen fitting field in the future and I would like to stay with Bullock after I have qualified as they are a good company.”

“I’m buzzing about being given this opportunity, I’m really glad that someone has given me a chance. Until this came along I couldn’t find an apprenticeship in the town and this has allowed me to get a foot on the ladder.

“I’d like to get plenty of site experience, learn as much as I can and pass my qualification. I feel like then the sky’s the limit!”
