tenancy support team - supporting you and your tenancy

What is Tenancy Support?

We recognise that some of you need help to maintain your tenancy, particularly if you are vulnerable. You may need support to maintain a tenancy, either in the short term to overcome a particular problem, or maybe on a long term basis because of particular needs.

We have a team of experienced tenancy support officers who provide support to residents who are vulnerable or where the person is having difficulties in maintaining their tenancy.

The team can offer advice and assistance in:

  • budgeting and managing finances, as well as rent arrears and debts
  • claiming the right benefits and help with completing forms for Housing Benefit, disability and state benefits
  • developing your skills so you can manage your tenancy successfully including life skills advice such as cleaning, healthy eating etc.
  • dealing with gas, electricity and other utilities
  • settling into a new area, finding out what's in the area e.g doctors, education and social centres
  • identifying health and safety and security issues within the home
  • suggesting routes into voluntary work, education, training or employment

The team can also liaise on your behalf with other agencies, other professionals and in some cases arrange appointments and attend meetings with you where required.

Before starting work with you, we will sit down with you and talk about what your needs are and what you would like assistance with. We would then agree with you what things we can assist you with, how we are going to do that, and how often we will meet.

‘June’ had to move from a first floor flat to a ground floor flat due to health problems, and had no money to arrange the move. We spoke to June and discovered she had served in the Air Force and was able to arrange with an ex-forces charity who gave a grant for removal costs and for carpeting the new flat. As a result, June has settled into her new flat without incurring debts.

‘Eric’ had a large Council Tax bill. Although he lives alone he had not claimed the rebate for being a single person. We contacted the Council Tax department on Eric’s behalf – the rebate was applied and as it was backdated, he received a refund of overpaid Council Tax. We were also able to help in getting Eric’s DLA claim re-assessed and it is now paid at a higher rate, improving his quality of life
