don't do nothing - let us know

The government is carrying out the ‘biggest shake-up’ of the welfare system in years meaning many of you may now be experiencing a change to the benefit you receive.

What you may not realise is that this change to your benefit may have a knock on affect on the Housing Benefit and Council Tax payments you receive.

So does it affect you? What to report and to whom...

Please tell North East Lincolnshire Council Housing Benefit Section straightaway if:

  • Your income changes (this could be wages, pensions, benefits, savings)
  • Your income support or Jobseeker’s Allowance (income-based) or Employment Support Allowance starts or stops
  • You change from Jobseeker’s Allowance (income-based) to Jobseeker’s Allowance (contribution-based)
  • You are going through the appeals process with any of your benefits
  • You change from Incapacity Benefit to Employment and Support Allowance
  • The number of people living in your house changes

"This is the biggest change to benefits that we have seen in a long time and we want to make sure that people know what they need to do.

"Problems arise when people are assessed and move to one benefit from another without telling the local housing benefit section at North East Lincolnshire Council.

"People think that they don't have to do anything when their circumstances change, that it is done for them. But it's not.

"Our concern at Shoreline is that they'll not realise that a change in circumstances can then lead to their Housing Benefit being suspended and they can end up with huge rent arrears and debt problems.

"We will all do what we can to help but it is up to you to let us know straightaway."
