the big sewer switchover

The government has decided that from 1 October 2011 water and sewerage companies will take over the ownership and maintenance of some of the current private drainage systems and private sewers. You should have received a letter from your water authority explaining this.

This means that water authorities will be responsible for clearing blockages and repairing defects in any length of pipe that serves two or more properties. In addition, they will also take over responsibility for any drains (pipes serving one property only) which lie outside the legal boundary of the property they serve. This will include drains which run through a neighbour’s garden or out into the road.

Shoreline properties

Anglian Water is responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of the main sewer system. If you think the main sewer is blocked please contact Anglian Water on 08457 145 145.

As a responsible landlord, we will continue to deal with blockages in Shoreline properties. To report a blockage please telephone 0845 849 2000, fill in our online form or email repairs@shorelinehp.com

If we suspect the blockage lies in a public sewer we will contact the water authority otherwise we will attend to the blockage ourselves.

If your drain is blocked you will usually know because your waste will stop going away when you flush the toilet or gullies outside will overflow. There may also be a smell.

Be careful what you put down the toilet

To avoid a blockage, do not put the following items down the toilet:

* Disposable nappies, liners, kitchen roll and cleaning wipes
* Razor blades, syringes and needles which could cut or harm operatives who clear blockages
* Condoms, incontinence pads, plasters and bandages which are usually filtered out and put into a landfill
* Medicines – these can kill bacteria including the good bacteria which help to clean the sewer.
* Do not pour cooking fats or oils down the sink.

The general rule is not to put anything down the toilet or drain other than human waster or toilet tissues
