creating communities to be proud of

A Grimsby teacher has spearheaded a project to teach pupils about the effects of anti-social behaviour, which has been funded by Shoreline.
The innovative learning resource is a planned programme of four lessons, which leads pupils through the causes, effects and solutions of anti-social activities, developed by Shoreline and Sandie Braithwaite of Hereford Technology School, Grimsby, as part of the school’s citizenship programme.
North East Lincolnshire Council’s Healthy Schools team and Shoreline anti-social behaviour officers have worked together to research, plan and prepare the lessons.
Following a successful pilot with students in Year 9 (aged 13 to 14 years), the programme will now be available for use with young people between the ages of 11 and 16 across the local authority and eventually the country.
Students brought the learning resource to life at the launch by demonstrating some of the activities it includes and turning one of the scenarios into a role play, illustrating how the programme ensures understanding of the possible causes, costs, risks and consequences of anti-social behaviour and encourages respect, understanding and positive relationships within the community.
“Throughout the programme students take responsibility for their own learning, coming up with what they believe are the causes, effects and possible solutions to anti-social activities” said Sandie Braithwaite.
“They begin to appreciate how anti-social behaviour, by people of all ages, can have lasting effects on everyone in a community, including themselves.
“The anti-social behaviour team have been very impressed with the work the children have done in these lessons and their suggestions could even be used in the real world afterwards."
“It’s really important to develop awareness through education.
“We are sure that the learning resource will have a positive and long-lasting effect both locally and at a national level, changing people’s attitudes and behaviour while encouraging understanding and respect.”
