Freshney Green football frenzy

England may be out of the European championships but we’ve ensured football fever will still reach the young people of Grimsby this summer by providing £4000 of funding for a year long sports academy on the former Yarborough estate.

We are supporting the Sports Linc initiative – a partnership between Humberside Police, North East Lincolnshire Council’s sport development and youth service and Grimsby Town Football Club – who will provide free professional sports sessions for young people.

The weekly sessions ensure young people have regular access to physical and social activities.

The coaching sessions delivering football, netball and street dance have already proved a great success, with more than 50 local youngsters turning up to the first sessions.

Shoreline neighbourhood manager Martin High added: “The academy is fantastic - it’s healthy, fun, social and free – and it has already been hugely supported by local residents.

“It’s an exciting time for this community and we hope that this project will continue to improve the neighbourhood and reduce anti-social behaviour as well as bring young people and their families together.”

Over the next eight years, the Freshney Green redevelopment – in partnership with Stamford Homes - will transform the neighbourhood into a multi-million pound high quality sustainable urban environment that will include up to 440 new homes and associated open space, a health centre, play area and traffic calming measures.
